We are currently in our third consecutive year of drought and the state is already using its reserves to supply everyday water to homes and businesses. Many California cities are passing water conservation resolutions and calling for residents to lower their water usage. This is a serious problem and it is so important that we all do our best to cut back on our water usage. We need to conserve! Here are some tips to help you reduce.
Tips for Indoors
- Check for leaks. Turn off all water sources. Check your water meter. If it's moving you have a leak in your system. Toilet leaks. Place a drop of food dye in the tank of your toilet and wait five minutes. If the dye comes into the tank, you have a leak.
- Fix leaks as soon as possible.
- Turn off the water when you brush your teeth, wash your face & shave.
- Shorten your showers by 1 or 2 minutes or limit to five minute.
- Wash full loads in the dishwasher & clothes washer.
- When washing dishes by hand, fill one side with soapy water to wash and the other with water to rinse.
- Replace high water-using toilets & shower-heads with high efficiency models.
- Keep hot water pipes insulated to avoid running water for to long. Catch water in a bucket while waiting for the water to heat up and reuse it.
- Retrofit faucets with an aerator flow restriction.
Clean vegetables in a bowl full of water.
Tips for Outdoors
- Replace high water using plants with native, drought resistant plants.
- Turn off sprinklers when it rains. Water less is winter and more in summer.
- Water between 6pm & 8am.
- Use a broom instead of hosing off sidewalks and driveways.
- Replace grass with synthetic turf
- Check sprinklers for leaks, over-spray and runoff. Fix any problems.
- Use mulch and composts.
- Use a commercial car wash instead of washing your car at home. (I like this one.) Or use a bucket of soap and water to wash and do a quick rinse with a hose with a shutoff nozzle.followed by a
